What is a Fixed Camera?

A camera can be fixed to only look at one specific view and such cameras are called Fixed Cameras. 1 out of every 1000 cameras you see around are Fixed Cameras. They cost less and are chosen to monitor a specific path, object, room or asset.

What is a PTZ Camera?

PTZ stands for Pan - Tilt - Zoom.

While PAN means panning the camera which is like horizontally parallel movement of a camera.

Tilt means as it stands for which is tilt of the camera up or down.

Zoom means zooming in a particular area.

Difference between Fixed and PTZ Cameras:
1. Fixed vs. PTZ: A camera can be fixed to only look at one specific view or it can be movable through the use of panning, tilting and zooming (i.e., moving left and right, up and down, closer and far away). Most cameras used in surveillance are fixed. PTZ cameras are generally used to cover wider fields of views and should generally be used only if you expect a monitor to actively use the cameras on a daily basis. A key reason fixed cameras are generally used is that they cost 5 to 8 times less than PTZs Cameras.

Understanding Picture Quality

In the last post on 7th April 2011 we had covered the different technologies available to you and a broad idea of the kind of output you can get from them. At Dee Cee Security Systems Pvt. Here we will give you a idea of the main aspect of CCTV Cameras which every buyer is looking for but gets confused when he sees technical words like CIF, 4CIF, D1,etc.

Before we go into understanding the above, you need to understand one word which "PIXEL". What is a Pixel?, while you hear megapixel, HDTV and other terminologies nowadays, very few people understand that they are based on amount of pixels they support.

In simple terms, PIXEL stands for Smallest Picture Element. See the below picture:

What you see above is a Monitor on the left. On the right side you see a image which is zoomed in version of the image. The selected area is shown as a square on the left side.The element has been red colored and named as Pixel. That is a Pixel. If we name that Pixel as P0 and the next one as P1,P2,P3...... and so..on... then we would get the image resolution. A image resolution bascially refelcts the total number of pixels the image.

Do understand the number of pixels is directly proportional to quality of picture. So higher the number of pixels better the picture clarity.

Following table gives you a idea of the number of pixels expected from a Analog Camera.

To understand the above, i will give you example, QCIF which gives you a resolution of 176 X 144 in PAL( used in Asian Countries) means it will give you a resolution of  176 Pixels X 144 Pixels horizontally and vertically. Thus as we go higher the image size increases.

Selection of CCTV Surveillance - Available Technologies

Like i promised in the last post, i would be covering the different technologies available at your disposal in the field of CCTV Surveillance which will help you to make the right choice for your requirement.

There are two technologies which are available to us on the basis of transmission & storage method, quality of picture, which are:

1. Analogue Cameras
2. Digital/IP Cameras

1. Analogue Cameras: Analog Cameras as the name suggests give analog output and the mode of transmission is analog. Analog cameras general come in different resolutions which you mostly hear, such as 420TVL which stands for 420TVLines or 480TVL or 540TVL. As the number of TVL go up the picture resolution or clarity goes up. Transmission of Analog output is done by using RG-59 cable to a Television or a Digital Video Recorder (DVR). DVR converts the signal from analog to digital and records it in a Surveillance Hard Disk installed in the DVR. 95% of the DVR's today are IP-enabled which means the data can be viewed remotely by accessing the DVR. In order to do so the DVR has to connected to internet by providing it a Public Internet Address.

The above gives you a brief idea on the expected quality of the image from a analog camera.

 2. IP/Digital Camera: Digital Surveillance Cameras are usually referred to as IP Cameras in the security field to avoid general name conflict with Digital Cameras used for taking snaps. IP Cameras as the name suggests give a digital output and digital mode of transmission is required here. Network Cable commonly referred to as Cat-5 or Cat-6 is used here. Digital Output coming from a IP Camera cannot be recorded in a DVR, it can be recorded in a Computer, Server(placed remotely or lcoally) with the help of the Video Management Software provided along with the IP Camera or on Network Video Recorders (NVR) or Hybrid DVR's. Most manufacturers provide free Video Management Softwares for upto 4 IP Cameras while others provide it free for more number of cameras. But as the number of Cameras increase you can keep in mind the cost of Licensing Software as you go along.

While the difference between the two images is quite visible, IP Cameras offer a advantage in terms of offering better picture quality as the choice can go to Megapixel Cameras when the resolution becomes 2 to 10 times the resolution of the expected resolution from a Analog Camera.

While the above gives you a brief knowledge on the technologies and the quality of picture you can expect , do understand that going forward Surveillance Solutions based on IP will gain steam due to the picture clairty, compatibility offered by them it terms of Video Analysis and Real time alerts. The real advantage which Analog offers in comparison to IP is the price. Production of IP Solutions in mass volumes is yet to take place and thus a cost anywhere between 4-5 times more then a similar analog camera at the entry level.

Placement of CCTV Camera for Surveillance

In this article i would like to cover identifying the need for placement of CCTV Cameras for Effective Surveillance. While realization and acceptance for need of CCTV Cameras may be a good step in the wake to have multiple eyes and keep theft under control, improper placement can lead to expenditure going over the roof.

Basic principle towards proper placement of CCTV Cameras can be divided under two categories:
1. Identify the Center Points
2. Focus on Main Assets

1. Identify the Center Points: Center Points can be defined as points of intersection & paths through which people, objects or vehicles have to pass in order to enter/exit a particular premises. Examples are Entrances, Hallways, Exit Points, Car Parking, Staircases.

2. Focus on Physical Assets: Main assets are the objects or places where monitoring is necessary. Objects such as expensive jewellery or artifact, merchandise for retail or expensive portable machinery and places such as points of cash transactions(cash counters/registers), reception, server room, store room and places which house a asset valuable to the organization.

The above should help in conducting a security survey and give you a cost effective solution. In the next article i will cover how to do the selection of cameras for different locations.

Emergency does not knock at your door before coming and every second counts at that moment of crisis. There are basically 3 major emergencies which one can think of i.e Police , Fire and Medical. At the time of crisis, each of the emergency has to be communicated to the concerned response agency for help to be available to you.A proper integration of all response systems facilitates help and places resources where they need to be.

Thus, governments need to invest in citywide emergency response systems that can aid the distribution of information and better support agencies in their task of serving and protecting. The main aim is to simplify the whole process and make it simpler for the citizens to communicate when they are in an emergency situation.

But the cost of setting up an Integrated Response system does not come cheap and governments needs to invest in millions depending on the level of deployment. A relatively smaller cost also has to be borne by the citizens in terms of having a Gadget in their house or cars which complies with the standard of the Integrated response system for the emergency communication.To ensure an efficient and responsive system for emergency services, agencies have to set very stringent reliability and redundancy requirements for their contractors. In the event of system failure, operations can fall back automatically to the hot-standby equipment to minimize any downtime and/or degradation of emergency services.

As the number of technology driven systems increase within a city, we can move towards a secure and safer place to live which can be termed as a 'Smart City'.

Dynamics in Video Surveillance

The digital video surveillance systems market is growing significantly, boosted by heightened public and private security concerns as well as a technology shift. The security industry is converging with information technology slowly and gradually transitioning to IP-based video surveillance systems. Video analytics is another technology that is rapidly advancing in surveillance systems.

Video surveillance has proved to be an effective measure as a crime deterrent and is being globally adopted by security and law enforcement agencies. The adoption by commercial establishments has also picked up as they it as a tool to control thefts and increase productivity. The digital video surveillance systems market is growing rapidly not only in terms of technological advances, but also in adoption of new applications. The number of cameras deployed is anticipated to be high along with the increasing security budgets for government and private sector organizations.

As per IMS Research the Indian video surveillance market is one-tenth the size of the Chinese market — US$165 million in 2010. However, much of China's growth is fuelled by its government's desire to watch over its population. It is unlikely India has the political or financial motivation to deploy large-scale public surveillance projects, reducing potential video growth. Video surveillance spending typically follows infrastructure projects, and India is no exception. There will be sustained investment related to roads, airports and railways.

A sad reality of terrorist attacks has heightened the need for security and protection. While it is difficult to assess the budget for video surveillance, funds will be earmarked for transportation and critical infrastructure. India has potential for video surveillance. However, the Indian tiger won't slay the Chinese dragon in terms of market size for some time to come.
